Frequently Asked Questions

How many time zones are in the United States?
The continental US has four time zones (Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific). Including Alaska and Hawaii, there are six standard time zones. With US territories, there are nine total time zones under US jurisdiction.
When does Daylight Saving Time start and end?
DST begins on the second Sunday in March at 2:00 AM (clocks spring forward one hour) and ends on the first Sunday in November at 2:00 AM (clocks fall back). Arizona and Hawaii do not observe DST.
What's the time difference between coasts?
The East Coast (Eastern Time) is always 3 hours ahead of the West Coast (Pacific Time). When it's noon in New York, it's 9:00 AM in Los Angeles, regardless of whether DST is in effect.
Why doesn't Arizona observe Daylight Saving Time?
Arizona opted out of DST in 1968 because the extra evening sunlight during hot summer months increased energy usage for air conditioning. The Navajo Nation within Arizona does observe DST to match surrounding Navajo lands.
Which states have multiple time zones?
Thirteen states span multiple zones: Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Tennessee (Eastern/Central); Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Texas (Central/Mountain); Idaho, Oregon (Mountain/Pacific); and Alaska (Alaska/Hawaii-Aleutian).
What does UTC stand for and how does it relate?
UTC stands for Coordinated Universal Time, the world's time standard. US time zones are expressed as UTC offsets: Eastern is UTC-5 (standard) or UTC-4 (daylight), Central is UTC-6/-5, Mountain is UTC-7/-6, Pacific is UTC-8/-7, Alaska is UTC-9/-8, and Hawaii is UTC-10.
